Michaela Roessner’s works range from science fiction to fantasy to magic realism to slipstream. Trained as a fine artist, with a BFA in Ceramics, and an MFA in Painting, she exhibits under the name M. M. Roessner-Herman. Her science fiction includes the novel Walkabout Woman, a 1989 nominee for the Mythopoeic Award, Vanishing Point, and a number of short stories, published in Asimov’s, SciFiction, Omni Online, and elsewhere. She is perhaps best known for her two novels, The Stars Dispose and The Stars Compel. Both with starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, they represent a high point in the tradition of historical fantasy. Her literary twist of creating a world where food and cooking comprise one of the most powerful systems of magic…one that ends up involving young Caterina de’ Medici…includes recipes at the end of the book! Michaela has also taught at the Clarion Workshop at Michigan State University and the Gotham Writers’ Workshop.
